Dr Samuel Cryer

Sam holds a PhD in organic chemistry from Imperial College London and is the inventor of Thermulon’s novel aerogel process. Sam stands at the intersection of materials science, entrepreneurship and sustainability; commercialising the production of Thermulon’s aerogels with one clear goal: to reduce the carbon footprint of the building stock and enable a net-zero future.

DJ is an experienced Board Director and Operations Director and has previously built and implemented operations and scale-up strategies in high growth companies across sectors
Jamie Hughes

Jamie brings over a decade of experience in the chemical industry, spanning business development, technical, project, and commercial roles. At Imtex Membranes, he led industry engagement for an innovative process technology, finding new applications in a risk-averse market. A Chartered Engineer with a Mechanical Engineering degree from the University of Bath, Jamie now focuses on driving market adoption of Thermulon’s process and aerogels, developing applications, partnerships, and strategic opportunities.
Dr Rulande Rutgers

Rulande has a proven track record of venturing, technology transfer and commercialisation of technologies. She has extensive experience in leading and developing high-performing technical teams in lean, fast-paced start-up settings, most recently as Process Technology Director for the Hydrogen Technologies Sector at Johnson Matthey. Rulande has a PhD in Chemical Engineering from Cambridge, and a MEng from Delft University of Technology.

Meet our technical team:
Alyne brings more than 8 years of aerogel experience to the team particularly in silica and silica-carbon aerogels. Alyne obtained her PhD in Chemical Engineering at University of Coimbra. Alyne works on the development, optimisation and improvement of synthetic pathways of nanoporous inorganic aerogel materials.

Dr Stephen Parirenyatwa
Head of Process Development
Stephen’s background is in the development and scale-up of a novel processes; earning his PhD in Chemical and Process Engineering at the University of Leeds focusing on the extraction of critical materials from mine waste. Stephen is responsible for Thermulon’s continuous production methodology.
Gurnoor Jassy
Head of Scale-Up
Gurnoor has 7 years of experience in the process development and scale-up of multiple chemical processes in various research business. His background is in chemical engineering and will be responsible for the designing and build of the continuous pilot scale and industrial batch scale process.
Terrence Willson
Senior Application Development Scientist
Terrence is a synthetic materials chemist with over a decade of experience in polymer membrane development, organic synthesis, and advanced analytical techniques. Holding a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Surrey, Terrence has contributed to cutting-edge research in energy materials, collaborating across academia and industry to develop novel ion-exchange membranes and pioneering characterisation methods.
Gulled has a masters in Chemical Engineering from UCL and has worked at Siemens as a Process Engineer / Consultant working on the development of gPROMS Process Simulation Software. Gulled develops simulation models and transforms modelling understanding into practical solutions as Thermulon moves to a pilot and commercial scale.

Dr Lukas Thoni
R&D Chemist
Lukas brings several years of aerogel experience to the team, having worked with other oxidic aerogels besides silica. His PhD research focused on developing aerogels as catalysts in heterogeneous catalysis. Lukas works on lab scale and upscaling of different processing steps.
Orla Mulholland-Patterson
Process Engineer
Orla obtained a Master of Professional Engineering in Chemical Engineering from the University of Western Australia. Her experience is in large scale metallurgy processes and metallurgy test laboratories. Orla assists with continuous and batch aerogel production.
Chiara Zafferri
R&D Chemist
Chiara earned a 2-year master degree in Industrial Chemistry at the University of Parma. She has been involved in developing high throughput methods for NMR and LC-MS screening for Plant Metabolomics. Her work focuses on optimising the synthetic pathway for the production of inorganic aerogel powder
Dr Sam Davies
Senior R&D Chemist
Sam's background is in the development of polymers for solutions to issues with both medical devices and consumer products. He completed his PhD in Chemical Engineering at Imperial College London focused on the development of novel polymeric materials for photonic biosensor devices.
Dr Katherine Macmillan
Senior R&D Chemist
Katherine has over 9 years of experience with hands-on laboratory work, ranging from soft matter physics, to wet chemistry. She is also trained in a wide range of analytical techniques. After completing her PhD at the University of Edinburgh, she completed post-docs in both Dusseldorf and Utrecht.
Dr Peter McDermott
Application Development Scientist
Peter’s background is in green chemistry and polymer science. He has worked on the development of biobased and sustainable polymers with applications in a wide variety of industries. Prior to moving into sustainable polymers he carried out a PhD in green chemistry, focusing on the synthesis of organophosphorus compounds at University College Dublin.
Doris Anic
Laboratory Chemist
Doris holds an MSc in Drug Discovery from the University of Nottingham and a BSc (Hons) in Medicinal Chemistry
from the University of Sunderland. Her background includes experience as
a Bioanalyst at a CRO, with expertise in LC-MS-based bioanalysis, method
development, and a wide range of analytical techniques.
Hannah Rudolph
Operations Lead
With experience in business analysis and operations across a diverse portfolio of companies—including start-ups in ag-tech, med-tech, and tourism — Hannah drives efficiency and fosters continuous improvement. She is dedicated to cultivating a collaborative environment that supports innovation and growth across all functions.
